What does it mean to leave home?
I visited the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village near Edmonton for the first time and found myself thinking about the people who left their homeland more than a century ago—and those who are still forced to leave home today.
One of my Ukrainian friends left Kyiv several years ago and now lives in Vilnius, Lithuania. I hope the day will come when she can return home.
I have been away from Japan, my own homeland, for 31 years. Unlike those who were forced to leave, I chose to move abroad. Yet living far from home has made me think deeply about nationality, identity, and the meaning of belonging.
My uncle spent about half of his life in Denmark but chose to remain a Japanese citizen throughout his life. I never got the chance to ask him why.
Every immigrant, past and present, has their own history and story.
I hope that everyone who has left home, whether by choice or by necessity, can find some peace along the way.
