Beneath the warm tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific lives one of the reef’s most spectacular fish — the Emperor Angelfish (*Pomacanthus imperator*).
Starting life as a tiny pelagic larva, this fish undergoes one of the most dramatic transformations on the reef. Juveniles are dark blue with striking white circular patterns, while adults gradually develop brilliant yellow and blue stripes and the unmistakable dark mask across their eyes.
An adult can reach nearly *40 cm* and has a reported maximum age of around **14 years**. Females can release tens of thousands of eggs during spawning, with an average fecundity reported at approximately **79,353 eggs**. The eggs drift freely in the open water, allowing currents to carry the next generation across the reef ecosystem.
But the Emperor Angelfish is not a typical predator. Instead, it carefully grazes the reef, feeding mainly on **sponges and other encrusting organisms**, while also consuming tunicates and algae.
From a tiny drifting larva to a **40-cm reef giant**, every stage is a remarkable battle for survival.
*Watch until the end to discover the incredible life cycle of the Emperor Angelfish!*
