Sakala Graha Bala Neene | Sikkil Gurucharan | Purandaradasa | Carnatic Vocal | The Peninsula Studios
Long before anyone had a word for astrology, this song was already making the argument: everything that moves you — the planets, the stars, the seasons, the pull of the moon — answers to something bigger still. Purandaradasa wrote it in the early fifteenth century as a Devarnama, a song-form built to carry philosophy to people who would never read a Sanskrit text, and its logic is disarmingly direct. If the sun and moon have power over you, he says, then know who has power over them.
Purandaradasa is remembered as the father of Carnatic music — the composer credited with systematising the pedagogy that every Carnatic musician still learns from today, centuries later. Sakala Graha Bala Neene is set in Raga Atana and Kanda Chapu Talam, a rhythmic cycle that gives the piece its distinct forward pull, as though the song itself is in motion the way the planets it describes are.
Sikkil Gurucharan performs it here, joined by Sumesh Narayanan on mridangam and M. S. Anantha Krishnan on violin. Where his reading of Dikshitar leans into stillness and his reading of Thyagaraja-adjacent repertoire draws out devotion, this Purandaradasa piece asks for something closer to conviction — the sound of an argument being won.
Music Changes Lives. And good music is good music.
