Indonesia — a country of 280 million people — started a match without a single Indonesia-born player. Eight of the eleven were born in the Netherlands. This is the full story: the 1938 Dutch East Indies World Cup team, the FIFA grandparent rule, Indonesia's no-dual-citizenship law, the players who said yes (Romeny, Haye, Paes, Idzes, Audero, Reijnders, Mitchell Baker), the results under Shin Tae-yong, Kluivert and Herdman — and the debate that still divides Indonesian football.
Should Indonesia keep building from the diaspora, or bet on local players? Tell me in the comments — and where you're watching from.
