Nobody at NBC Studios expected John Wayne and Elvis Presley to turn a Sunday taping of The Dean Martin Show into one of the strangest and funniest moments of the 1960s. Twelve days after Elvis's legendary comeback special, the Duke, just down from the Colorado mountains after shooting True Grit, walked into the King's dressing room. A friendly hello turned into a dare: was Elvis really the only man in Hollywood who could move?
What followed was a live dance-off refereed by Dean Martin himself, glass of "bourbon" in hand. Elvis brought the hips. The 61-year-old Duke, with one lung and a pair of old cowboy boots, brought precise, heavy footwork he'd learned working out fight scenes with stuntman Yakima Canutt. Then Dean made them dance together, and the whole thing fell apart in the best possible way, with the King of Rock and Roll flat on his back in the middle of the stage.
📺 In this video:
The backstage dare that started it all Why Dean Martin nearly spilled his drink reading the note Elvis's Hound Dog vs. the Duke's western swing The secret footwork John Wayne learned from Yakima Canutt The collision during Twist and Shout The move that sent Elvis Presley flat on his back The hour the two of them spent talking after the cameras stopped The gifts they traded, and where they ended up
