"The 7th Annual 'Vanilla' Level Design Contest" - or "VLDC7" for short - was quite a bit of a game changer for the concept behind this series of competitions. For the first time, a VLDC was designed to create a big compilation hack containing all the submissions. Every participant was assigned specific level & sublevel-slots, Map16-space, ExGFX-slots, secondary exists to avoid overlap and make a compilation easy.
While past contests were entirely vanilla (meaning that "Lunar Magic" was the only tool permitted), "VLDC7" was the first time it was allowed to use custom music to spice up the levels. And... it didn't exactly stop there.
It was decided to create an original soundtrack for this hack which would include overworld themes as well as level themes which people could choose as a ressource for their levels. Sticking to the "Vanilla"-theme as close as possible, the majority of those newly composed level themes would make use of Super Mario World's familiar leit-motif.
Of course, no one was required to use those tracks, so quite a few ports taken from SMW Central's custom music section made it into the hack as well - but this first disc focuses on the original compositions.
It is perhaps worth noting that compared to other big compilation hacks this one uses a fairly high percentage of original music (a little over 50%), not even taking into account that the original music created for this hack gets quite a bit of playing time throughout.
Tracks 1.01 ~ 1.03, 1.05, 1.07 ~ 1.08, 1.11 ~ 1.13, 1.15 ~ 1.18, 1.20 ~ 1.25, 1.27 ~ 1.28 & 1.31 ~ 1.32
were specifically created for this hack.
Let's-a press play to start!
