The 383 stroker is the most famous small block Chevy engine General Motors never put in a single car. Not one. In nearly fifty years of small block production, Chevrolet never offered a 383 in any vehicle it sold. Racers built it themselves, out of a crankshaft pulled from the one engine nobody wanted: the 400 small block, the V8 Chevrolet cast with siamesed cylinders and no coolant between the bores. This is how the swap actually works, why it works, and the coincidence buried in Chevrolet's own parts bin that made it possible with zero custom components. We go through the exact numbers: the 2.100 inch rod journal Chevrolet standardized in 1968, the 0.200 inch of main journal that had to come off, and the 9.0000 inch rotating assembly stack that lands identically on a 350, a 400, and the junkyard 383 built from both. Then the part almost nobody covers. The number 383 was never Chevrolet's. Chrysler had it first, and in 1959 built an engine with a 4.03125 inch bore and a 3.750 inch stroke. The Chevy 383 runs 4.030 by 3.750. The strokes are identical. The bores differ by one and a quarter thousandths of an inch. Chrysler killed it after two model years.
