Episode 29 of the Sturry Link Road project sees several areas of the scheme move into their next stages, from sheet piling at the north abutment to reinforcement on Platform D and the southern end beginning to look increasingly like a road. At the north abutment, pre augering moves quickly into sheet piling. By the end of the week, the whole frontage has changed, with the main cofferdam and wing wall sections beginning to take shape beside the railway. When complete, the north abutment setup will use 120 individual sheet piles, with 80 eight metre sheets around the main cofferdam and another 40 five metre sheets forming the two wing walls. Across the railway on Platform D, Pier 4 moves from final clean out into the next structural stage. Spacer blocks are laid out across the blinding before the first reinforcement bars begin going in, gradually creating the heavily reinforced pile cap that will eventually tie the CFA foundations together. Just across the platform, Pier 3 follows closely behind. Excavation and pile cropping continue through what has easily been the wettest cofferdam on the job so far, before the pile heads reach their final cut off level and blinding is placed to create a clean working surface for the next stage. Platform D itself also continues expanding, with excavated stone being reused in the platform widening ahead of the future arrival of the enormous viaduct beams. Down at the southern end, things are becoming much more defined. The future kerb lines and footways begin to appear, more kerbstones arrive on site, the filter drain continues along the approach and new ducting is installed beneath the carriageway for the future signal controlled toucan crossing. The attenuation pond also starts changing noticeably this week as the edges and batters are shaped ahead of the next stage of construction. And of course, there’s still time for five familiar residents of the River Stour to make another appearance. 🦢 We also asked a question during the episode.
