I have had a rather busy couple of weeks, mixed in with trying a few mashups that started well but then I had to abandon as they started feeling too forced. As you know, I always try and make sure the two songs I choose don't fight with each other and co-exist in a musical way. I can't believe I didn't try a Tears for Fears track earlier. There is something about NIN and TFF that seems to work really well...maybe it's the dark subject matter juxtaposed with the beautiful songwriting. The more I worked on it the more I felt like there was a story in the way these two songs fit together. As far as my perception goes both deal with anger, frustration and the feeling of having lost control..but they seem to approach those emotions from completely different directions and have different ways of dealing with them. Where Trent turns that anger inwards (almost a kind of self flagelation) Tears for Fears turn it outwards in a kind of euphoric release. Shout is famously based around the idea of primal screaming made popular by American psychologist Arthur Janov. In this mashup I guess I am posing the idea that maybe it would be better to stop punishing ourselves and let the anger out in healthier ways. Scream. Run. Cry. Whatever you need to do. Just don't beat yourself up. I hope you enjoy the result anyway. Technical stuff - I had to slow That's What I Get down a fair bit. I also had to do a lot of work timing the Shout stems ( I got hold of the original ones) as Ableton could not seem to work out the actual tempo!! Luckily these tracks are both in the same key..this is always the most important factor in any of the mashups I do. As always, I like to re-iterate that I do not use any generative AI to make my music. The artefacts you hear in the vocals are a by product of stem splitting and pitch shifting. It's not ideal and I don't like how it affects the vocal but nothing can be done to repair or prevent it during this process. I love music and this is a passion project. I spend hours re-arranging these tracks in Logic in my spare time - so if you do have any criticisms please be kind and make them constructive. Feedback is always welcome. From the ruins, with love.
