Local body elections 2026 in Andhra Pradesh have been marked by violence even before a single vote was cast. From street fights, to stone pelting, house arrests and gun firing, police have filed 16 FIRs for the snatching, ripping and destruction of nomination papers.
By the end of the nomination window on October 25, the State Election Commission confirmed that 599 municipal ward seats across 46 urban local bodies were declared uncontested. The ruling TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance took 96.16% of them.
But why do local body polls matter so much in Andhra Pradesh? Why did Pulivendula, former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s home turf, become a major battleground for violence?
In this episode of #LetMeExplain, Pooja Prasanna looks at the violence, the uncontested wards, and what is really at stake.
