Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked his 76th birthday by inaugurating SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, at a time when India’s semiconductor ambitions are beginning to move from policy announcements and construction sites to actual commercial production.
During the event, PM Modi formally marked the start of commercial production at CDIL Semiconductor’s facility in Mohali, Punjab, and Suchi Semicon’s OSAT facility in Palsana, Gujarat. He said the next phase of India’s semiconductor journey would focus not only on manufacturing chips at home, but also on building a complete ecosystem around design, equipment, materials, packaging, research and skilled manpower.
The larger story, however, goes well beyond these two facilities.
Applied Materials, one of the world’s most important semiconductor equipment companies, announced plans to invest $5 billion in India over the next decade. The plan includes a proposed 140-acre advanced semiconductor research park, expansion of its India supply chain and a major increase in R&D capability. Lam Research has also announced an investment of around ₹10,000 crore to establish its first silicon-component manufacturing facility in India.
Micron, meanwhile, has already begun commercial production at its Sanand facility in Gujarat. The company says it expects to assemble and test tens of millions of chips in India this year, before scaling that number to hundreds of millions in 2027. Finished DRAM and NAND products from the facility are already being shipped to customers outside India.
The government has also moved ahead with Semicon 2.0, with an approved outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore. The programme expands the focus beyond fabrication plants to chip design, advanced packaging, semiconductor equipment and materials, R&D, domestic intellectual property and workforce development. Twelve semiconductor manufacturing projects had already been approved under the first phase of the programme.
SEMICON India 2026 itself reflects how much global attention India’s semiconductor push is now attracting. More than 600 companies are participating, with representatives from 52 countries, over 400 executives and more than 150 speakers. Major companies represented around the event include Micron, ASML, Applied Materials, Infineon, Tokyo Electron, Lam Research, Tata Electronics, Intel and AMD.
The significance of all this comes at a time when AI is driving enormous demand for computing power, memory and advanced chips, while geopolitical tensions are pushing companies and governments to look for more diversified and trusted semiconductor supply chains. India is trying to use that shift to move from being primarily a major chip-design and electronics market to becoming a meaningful part of the global manufacturing and semiconductor supply chain.
