Above the town of Bușteni, in the Southern Carpathians, a steel cross stands on the edge of a cliff at 2,291 m. It is almost 40 metres tall and it is the highest cross in the world built on a mountain peak. It was raised between 1926 and 1928, in memory of the Romanian soldiers who died defending these mountain passes in the First World War. There were no roads and no machines up here. The steel was hauled by oxen, by cable, and on the backs of horses, along the same paths hikers walk today. This walk starts in the forest above Bușteni and climbs the Jepii Mici trail, gaining about 1,400 metres to the plateau. Through beech forest, past the treeline, over open alpine ground, and up the final slope to the cross. No music. No narration. Just the forest, the wind, and the sound of walking. Filmed in the Bucegi Mountains, Southern Carpathians, Romania. ────────── A Quiet Trail is a silent hiking channel from the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. New trail every 1–2 weeks.
