Here's a video to show some consistency and specifics with crowd control with Cao Ren. This is done in Chaos Mode.
A feeling I often get in my Tier List work is some disconnect between how I describe things on paper. There are all sorts of things that may be hard to picture when things are aren't displayed visually. On top of this, there may still be disagreement with things even when shown visually, as some people may dismiss the performance in the videos as not sufficient to show consistency. One example of this may be attacking safely in crowds to fill Musou with Cao Ren.
A reason for suspecting this is my own improvement and development process for Cao Ren and other characters. Before I came up with these maximization methods, I decided that Cao Ren was not safe enough to Musou fill in crowds. But my improvement shows for example that Guan Yu can be very safe and effective with a medium weight weapon, Cao Pi can use JC safely if backed by his C1 ice orb, and Cao Cao's C5 can be made completely abusable if the Dragon Arms is equipped, and a specific way of attacking is adopted. For the reason that before I developed these new methods, I was adamantly certain that they were not possible, I imagine that many others may feel the same way.
Lets get on with the comments on Cao Ren and Crowd Control.
his third normal attack is an attack that has less attack coverage than other normal attacks. It also covers the most distance than other normal attacks.
it is useful then to use his third normal to create some distance between him and the crowd. Do this by turning around when executing it, so that he takes that hop away from the crowd to create that distance.
a quick observation of the nature of all his other normal attacks (except his sixth) leads to a protective series of attacks if he attacks in a counterclockwise direction.
the key for Cao Ren's success is how he stays in one spot if he attacks in a CCW fashion
if he approaches crowds without threats from behind, this method of attacking will keep him safe in a large range of crowds sizes, which is what I hope to show in this video
some characters that also have very favorable normal attacks can't do this because they move too much during their attacks. A good example is Taishi Ci.
this method for Cao Ren obviously isn't failproof. He's limited in massive crowds, as they migrate around him no matter what you do.
in a massive crowd case, it turns out that his Musou filling ability is enough to just attack in a straight line instead
result is, there is a nice overlap, and no crowd size scenario that Cao Ren cannot handle.
the only caution is how clustered the crowds are. The more clustered the better.
Use C1 or running around to promote clustering.
