Everest is usually defined by its summit. But for more than sixty years, some climbers have been drawn to a different challenge: the Hornbein Couloir and the Super Direct — one of the most beautiful, dangerous and rarely climbed lines on the mountain. From Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld’s historic 1963 West Ridge traverse to the Japanese North Face expedition of 1980, Erhard Loretan and Jean Troillet’s fast ascent, Marco Siffredi’s disappearance, Ueli Steck’s unfinished project, Kilian Jornet’s solo attempt and Jim Morrison’s first ski descent in 2025, the Hornbein became a place where every generation invented its own definition of success. This documentary traces the history of the Hornbein Couloir, the Everest Super Direct, extreme skiing and snowboarding on Everest, and the changing reasons people continue to return to the world’s highest mountain.
