Band Band Clock at Nuit Blanche Toronto 2026: The Marching Band That Became a Living Cuckoo Clock Toronto’s Nuit Blanche turned 20 this year, and the city celebrated the only way it knows how — by staying up all night and filling the streets with art. Among the 70-plus projects scattered across downtown on October 3, 2026, one stood out as both the visual emblem and the beating heart of the anniversary edition: Band Band Clock. Conceived by Toronto graphic designer Lisa Kiss, Band Band Clock is exactly what it sounds like — a marching band made of marching bands. Drawing as many as 70 musicians from local ensembles including SHOUT! The Band and Gayly Forward, the project transformed Nathan Phillips Square and the surrounding City Hall precinct into a stage for spontaneous, hourly musical parades. Dressed in custom uniforms by award-winning costume designer Susan Dicks, the band marched through the exhibition site all night, ringing in every hour with a fresh performance — a living, breathing cuckoo clock for the 20th anniversary of Canada’s largest contemporary art event. The concept was born while Kiss was already working on Nuit Blanche’s 20th-anniversary branding. She pitched organizers on something they weren’t expecting: a real marching band. As she put it, the band would “come down the City Hall ramp every hour on the hour to act as a living cuckoo clock”. The result was a project that captured both the pomp and the celebratory spirit of two decades of Nuit Blanche — and one that you literally heard before you saw. This video captures the energy of that night: the horns, the drums, the crowd surging toward the music, and the unmistakable joy of a city that refuses to sleep when there’s art to be experienced. Whether you were there in person or are discovering Nuit Blanche for the first time, Band Band Clock is the perfect introduction to what this festival is all about — contemporary art that is free, accessible, and unapologetically alive.
