History: Kay Gardner Beltline Trail has a fascinating history tied to Toronto’s early railway expansion and urban growth. The trail was originally part of the historic Toronto Belt Line Railway, built in 1892. The railway was designed to connect new suburban neighbourhoods north of downtown Toronto with the city core and help spark a real-estate boom. Passenger trains ran in a large loop from Union Station through areas like Moore Park, Forest Hill, and Fairbank. However, the railway was not successful. High ticket prices and an economic downturn meant very few riders used it. Passenger service ended in 1894 after only about two years of operation. In 1910, parts of the rail corridor were rebuilt for freight trains by the Grand Trunk Railway. Freight service continued until the late 1960s and early 1970s, when construction of Allen Road cut the line apart. Eventually, Canadian National Railway sold the abandoned corridor to the City of Toronto. During the 1970s, local residents and city activists fought to preserve the old railway corridor as public green space instead of allowing housing development. One of the strongest advocates was Kay Gardner, a Toronto city councillor who helped protect the land for future public use. The trail officially became a recreational path in the late 1980s, and in 1999–2000 the section between Allen Road and Mount Pleasant Road was renamed Kay Gardner Beltline Park in her honour. Today, the 9-kilometre trail is one of Toronto’s most popular urban walking and cycling routes. It passes through ravines, residential neighbourhoods, cemetery landscapes, and historic railway bridges — especially the famous bridge over Yonge Street with the “Iron Horse” sculptures.
