A quiet mountain village today — but more than a century ago, this ridge was once a busy rural marketplace.
This walking tour takes you through Yegi Village (野记村) in Sandu County, Guizhou, southwest China.
Hidden high in the mountains, Yegi is not just another traditional Miao village. Historical accounts describe an old street built during the Qing Dynasty’s Xianfeng era. The village once prospered from tung-oil production and trade, drawing people from surrounding mountain communities to exchange rice, vegetables, charcoal and other goods.
Some traces of that past can still be found today. During this walk you will pass old timber houses, tiled roofs, narrow lanes, everyday village courtyards and the remains of a former tung-oil workshop.
Yegi Village sits at about 856 meters above sea level, around 16 km from Sandu County, and was included in China’s fifth batch of officially recognized traditional villages in 2019.
What interests me most is the contrast:
a place that feels extremely quiet today once served as a trading point for people living across these mountains.
No talking.
No music.
No artificial sounds.
Just a slow walk through a real mountain village in China.
🎧 Headphones recommended for the natural village ambience.
