Top 10 UK Cities & Areas With the Largest Indian Communities

Did you know that about 1.93 million people of Indian ethnicity live across the United Kingdom? Using the latest completed UK Census results, the total is approximately 1,927,150 people: 1,864,318 in England and Wales (2021), 52,951 in Scotland (2022), and 9,881 in Northern Ireland (2021). These are Census ethnicity figures, not India-born population figures. But where did Indian communities build their new lives? In this episode of Diaspora Atlas, we count down the Top 10 UK cities and areas with the largest Indian communities, exploring the businesses, restaurants, places of worship, culture, family networks, and generations that helped shape these communities. The other figures are based on Census 2021 local-authority data for England and Wales, while Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own census dates. The ONS states that Census 2021 ethnicity data classify usual residents by ethnic group, with “Indian or British Indian” as a detailed category.
