A slow, calm walk through one ordinary working day below stairs in a London townhouse, in the foggy November of 1868. We follow Ellen, a nineteen-year-old housemaid from Suffolk, from half past five in the morning until she climbs the back stairs to bed: lighting the kitchen range in the dark, sifting cinders and scattering tea leaves on the carpet, whitening the front step while the crossing sweeper starts his day, carrying hot water up four flights of stairs, a Monday wash day around the steaming copper and the mangle, the butcher's boy at the area door, the knife machine and the oil lamps, the muffin man's bell at teatime, dinner carried upstairs course by course, and a quiet half hour of cocoa and letters in the servants' sitting room. The household is imagined, but everything they do is drawn from Victorian household books, a real London maid's diary, great-house account books and the service rooms museums have kept. Written and researched for Wick & Quill, read gently, and set to public-domain paintings.
There is nothing you need to remember. Lie back, let the voice fade into the background, and sleep.
