A Lifetime of Bleeding: Inherited Platelet Disorders in Women

Heavy menstrual bleeding may be an early clinical clue to an inherited platelet disorder. An accurate diagnosis can inform treatment, genetic counseling, family testing, and, when appropriate, blood cancer risk surveillance. In this webinar, Christina, an individual with RUNX1-FPD, shares her experiences from her first period through diagnosis, family planning, pregnancy, perimenopause, and hysterectomy at age 43. Hilary Whitworth, MD, MSCE, of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Robert Silver, MD, of the University of Utah provide clinical context throughout. Topics include recognizing abnormal bleeding, evaluating possible inherited platelet disorders, genetic testing, treating heavy menstrual bleeding and iron deficiency, contraceptive options, planning for pregnancy and delivery, postpartum care, and managing bleeding risks associated with procedures and surgery. Learning objectives: 1. Recognize clinical clues of inherited platelet disorders in women and girls and identify when to refer to hematology. 2. Understand key characteristics of inherited platelet disorders using RUNX1-FPD as a case study. 3.
