The most famous person from every Arizona county, all 15 of them, under one rule that throws out some of the biggest names born here: raised here, not born here.
Arizona has a problem most states don't. So many people here were born somewhere else, and so many people born here grew up somewhere else, that a birth certificate tells you almost nothing. Stevie Nicks was born in Phoenix and grew up in other states. Sandra Day O'Connor was born in El Paso and grew up on a cattle ranch on the New Mexico line. So this video runs on one rule: where you were raised is what counts.
We go county by county through all 15, in five regions: the North Country, the East, the Southeast, the River West and the Valley. Each region sends one champion to a final five, and the final is decided on a plain yardstick: how many people outside Arizona would recognize them, by name or by face. It opens on a red-orange entrance beside the Phoenix Art Museum with a man's name on it, and it closes on whose name that is.
Along the way you get the stories behind the names. An eleven-year-old who went out at midnight to cut down billboards on a Flagstaff highway. A future mayor of New York who played cornet in his father's Army band at Fort Whipple. A frontier historian who carried Arizona's electoral votes in a dress made of copper. A ranch girl who changed a flat tire alone in the desert at fourteen and grew up to sit on the Supreme Court. A Pima Marine from Sacaton in the most famous photograph of the Second World War. And one county we honestly couldn't fill, so we're asking you.
