The Indy 500 Tradition Taking Over Indiana High School Sports

On today’s episode of Get IN. Sports, Dom Miranda sat down with Chris Kaufman, IHSAA assistant commissioner and foundation president, and Sheri Shipp, American Dairy Association Indiana youth wellness manager, to discuss their partnership that brings the “winners drink milk” tradition to Indiana high school state championships. They explain how the idea connects to the Indianapolis 500 milk tradition dating to Louis Meyer’s 1940s victory, and how Indiana dairy farmers present ice-cold milk to selected student “milk drinkers” after championships. They describe strong student and community reactions and goals to make the tradition permanent while educating about milk’s recovery and nutrition benefits. They also highlight farmers’ roles, the IHSAA’s use of partnership revenue to reimburse schools, and how community makes Indiana sports special. If you like this episode and want to hear more Get IN.
