Some credit cards promise you free flights. But nothing is really free. So who's paying for that flight? In this video, we follow one person, Sara, and one card payment to see how airlines really make their money. You'll see how airlines create points out of nothing and sell them to banks, why your points can suddenly be worth less, and how people who pay with cash end up helping pay for other people's free flights. What you'll learn: • This year, airlines worldwide are expected to keep less than $5 from each passenger they fly. • One American airline is on track to get more than $9 billion this year from a single card partner, about twice its expected profit. • In 2020, one airline's points program was valued at almost twice what the whole company was worth on the stock market. • In America, people paying with cash and debit cards pay an estimated $30 billion a year toward other people's card rewards. Sara and Leo are illustrative examples. The numbers are real, and American figures are labeled as American.
