Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is heading to federal trial October 19, 2026 — as prosecutors unveil 1,700 FBI exhibits in the Oakland bribery case.
A California mayor's corruption trial just got worse — and it has nothing to do with the money anymore. Inside an Oakland federal courtroom, prosecutors and defense lawyers spent three hours fighting over which of 1,700 exhibits, 365 images, and 65 videos a jury will see in the Sheng Thao / Duong FBI investigation. The same week, prosecutors locked in a second cooperating witness — and this one opens a door the first informant never could.
This is the Oakland mayor trial breakdown: a newly surfaced January 2024 phone call allegedly about the mayor "acting right" to win a second term, an October 2022 recording allegedly bragging about paying "everyone" after a razor-thin election win, and the fight over whether the jury hears about star witness Mario Juarez's violent past.
Nothing here has been proven — Sheng Thao, Noel Jenkins, and David and Andy Duong have all pleaded not guilty. But with trial set for October 19, 2026, this video breaks down what prosecutors must prove for quid pro quo, what the judge is cutting, and why the second informant Bryan Azevedo changes everything.
