Patrón changed tequila forever.
In 1989, tequila was still seen by many Americans as cheap liquor. Then John Paul DeJoria — the businessman behind Paul Mitchell hair products — launched Patrón at a price almost nobody thought tequila could command.
He didn’t own a distillery. A family producer in Jalisco made the tequila for him. What Patrón really controlled was the bottle, the brand, the positioning and the price.
It worked.
Patrón helped create the entire premium tequila category, grew into one of the biggest tequila brands in America, and was eventually valued at $5.1 billion when Bacardi bought the company in 2018.
But the strategy worked so well that everybody copied it.
Celebrity tequila brands exploded. Thousands of premium bottles entered the market. Don Julio and Casamigos grew rapidly. Then consumers started asking different questions: Who actually makes this tequila? How is the agave processed? Are additives being used? Does the story on the bottle match what happens inside the distillery?
By 2025, Patrón had fallen to number four in U.S. tequila volume, while cheaper brands and smaller producers were gaining ground. Even some of the premium rivals that once threatened Patrón are now experiencing major declines of their own.
In this video, we trace Patrón from its beginnings with Siete Leguas in Jalisco, through its explosive rise, the $5.1 billion Bacardi deal, the celebrity tequila boom, the additive-free controversy, and the changing tastes now reshaping the entire tequila industry.
The brand that taught America to pay more for tequila is now being forced to prove something completely different: what is actually inside the bottle.
