Claims of being based on the real-life accounts of Frank Dux frame the plot, which follows a captain in the U.S. Army Special Forces who AWOLs to Hong Kong. Dux travels to participate in the Kumite, an underground, full-contact martial arts tournament held once every five years in secret. To honor his dying master, Senzo Tanaka (Roy Chiao), Dux must survive a brutal bracket of international fighters while evading military investigators attempting to bring him back to the United States.
