The silk industry began to flourish here in Okaya, Japan from the Meiji period until the early Showa period (mid 19th centry to early 20th centry). At that time Japan was well known for its silk industry and Okaya boasted the largest production of raw silk in the entire country. Okaya's contribution to the modernization of Japan is still noted today for its significant impact. Even now, Okaya utilizes its historically and culturally significant silk trade.The entire process from cocoon farming (sericulture), silk reeling, dying and weaving all takes place here in Okaya. New initiatives are continuously being developed and work being done to ensure the tradition is passed on to the coming genereations. We invite you to take part in this unique "Kusuguru" (invoking the senses) experience only available here in Okaya.
