Eddie Van Halen changed what rock guitar could sound like. When Van Halen exploded onto the scene in the late 1970s, Eddie brought an astonishing combination of technique, tone, rhythm, experimentation and outright musical mischief with him. Guitarists suddenly had a whole new vocabulary to explore. From the tapping in Eruption to harmonics, wide interval stretches, tremolo picking, unusual scale patterns, whammy-bar techniques and his unmistakable approach to effects and tone, Eddie’s playing influenced generations of guitarists. And then, of course, there was the legendary “brown sound.” In this lesson, we are less interested in simply copying Eddie note-for-note and more interested in understanding some of the techniques behind his playing so you can incorporate them into your own guitar vocabulary. 🎸 In Part 1: • Eddie Van Halen-style tapping • Natural and tapped harmonics • Tremolo picking • 3-string scale patterns • Phaser, flanger and delay effects • EVH-inspired phrasing and technique • Van Halen song examples you can use as practice material Use these ideas as a springboard. Learn the technique, understand why it works, then turn it into something of your own. That, after all, is rather Eddie. RIP Eddie Van Halen. ❤️ A true original who permanently changed the sound, vocabulary and possibilities of the electric guitar. ... 🎸 Welcome to Uptempo Music Lessons Learn music with a real human.
