How can artificial intelligence help engineers reduce aircraft drag, accelerate design and better understand turbulence? Ricardo Vinuesa, associate professor of aerospace engineering and associate chair for research at the University of Michigan Department of Aerospace Engineering, shares how a turbulent childhood flight over the Pyrenees inspired his interest in aerodynamics and fluid mechanics. Vinuesa explains how his research uses explainable deep learning, deep reinforcement learning and generative AI to control turbulent flows, improve aircraft efficiency and make AI-supported engineering decisions more transparent. He also discusses how his team can complete simulations in approximately 30 seconds that would take days using current state-of-the-art computational methods, as well as why the most transformative advances will come from combining AI capabilities with deep physical and engineering knowledge.
