Neptune is the most distant planet in our solar system, 2.8 billion miles from the Sun. In 1989, Voyager 2 became the only spacecraft to ever visit it, racing past at 40,000 mph before vanishing into interstellar space. It never slowed down. It never stopped. And that's the only reason it survived. A return mission to Neptune would require solving every problem Voyager 2 avoided: decelerating from interplanetary speeds using a technique never tested at any planet, entering orbit around an ice giant with no solid surface and supersonic winds, surviving years in a system where sunlight is 900 times fainter than on Earth, and then somehow carrying enough fuel, power, and supplies to make the decades-long journey home, all on a spacecraft slowly dying since the day it launched. In this video, we break down the engineering, physics, and human endurance challenges that make a round trip to Neptune effectively impossible with any technology that exists today or is currently under development.
