Transport Fever 2, map k (11)
Ripollet - Sabadell - Alcira - Girona Exchange
1964, BR Standard Class 9F - 'Evening Star' & Mk1 Coaches
This route started right at the end of the steam era, with the Evening Star being the final steam locomotive built on this map.
It was to be like any other, a normal passenger railway connecting towns together, but with only one steam loco and no permission to build more, alternatives had to be found. Across the map many old routes were being replaced by diesel and electric trains, this freed up one of each BR Standard Classes 5 and 7 to be sent to this new route to assist with capacity. Currently there is only one other steam loco in passenger service on this map and one more in storage, through plenty of 7s and 9Fs remain on their original freight routes.
The demand kept rising, and with no more steam locos and no available diesel locos, an innovative concept was put to the test for the first time on this map, diesel multiple units - specifically the Class 110 which had the power necessary to climb this mountainside railway without getting in the way of the express steam trains and other freight trains.
Also on this route, Ripollet station was originally a terminus for the lakeside route, until that route was electrified and diverted to a new through station closer to Ripollet's city centre to continue a loop around the lake. This diversion left the old station unused and disconnected from the mainline for many years, with the new route up to Girona coming in to save it from demolition.
