Cybercrime is no longer limited to banks, IT companies or financial institutions. Hospitals, clinics, doctors and healthcare systems are increasingly dependent on digital platforms, making cybersecurity an essential part of patient safety and healthcare delivery.
In this special session from META MEDICON 2026, Mr Narasimha Komar, IPS, Vadodara, explains the changing landscape of cybercrime and why healthcare professionals need to actively protect their personal, professional and institutional digital systems.
The talk covers common cyber threats including UPI and banking fraud, phishing, identity theft, social engineering, digital arrest scams, data theft, deepfakes, ransomware and dark-web crime. Mr Komar also explains how artificial intelligence and machine learning are making fraudulent messages, impersonation and targeted attacks increasingly sophisticated.
A major focus of the session is healthcare cybersecurity. With patient records, diagnostic reports, hospital operations, scheduling and clinical systems increasingly digitized, a cyberattack can disrupt not only data but also the continuity of medical services. The presentation emphasizes cyber hygiene, password security, multi-factor authentication, patient-data protection, staff awareness and dedicated cyber governance within healthcare institutions.
Mr Komar also discusses the importance of rapid reporting after cyber fraud, highlighting the national cybercrime helpline 1930 and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. He emphasizes that early reporting can improve the possibility of freezing fraudulent financial transactions and initiating law-enforcement action.
