This bonus episode is part of an AI-generated history of engineering, from a bridge volume sitting between the eighth and ninth volumes, to consolidate diverse topics that don't fit neatly into the Engineering history. For more volumes in the series, please see my channel.
This project is planned as ~45 volumes, following the problems engineers faced, the constraints they encountered, the solutions they tried, the failures along the way, and how each generation of technology made the next one possible. It is deliberately written as a narrative rather than a textbook - a way to accompany the textbooks, not replace them.
There are plenty of excellent books about the history of technology and engineering. But when I wanted to understand the whole story, I found myself jumping between specialized histories, different disciplines, different eras, and very different styles of writing. I wanted something more comprehensive: a single, connected narrative that could follow the evolution of technology from the earliest engineering achievements all the way to modern computing and AI. And in a narrative style that I liked.
So I decided to build one for myself - a comprehensive history that looks into how things came to be, instead of just how the modern incarnation is built. I put together an agentic flow, and let it go through rounds of research, refinement, review, and finally writing the chapter. The written chapters, mostly using Gemini flash models behind the agents, were then narrated by Chatterbox-TTS. The early outputs weren't great, so I iterated through the setup several times. Volumes 1 and 2 have a lot of repetition and lack coherence because these were the early versions of the agentic flow. I may get around to a re-release of these volumes at some point.
The whole project is meant for my personal listening, for me to learn from it. I am a consumer of this work as much as everyone else. I can make no guarantees on the quality or accuracy of the content - except that I've iterated through it a few times, and believe that the agentic flow itself is fairly rigorous.
All of this book/podcast is AI-generated - I made zero manual edits. Several mistakes might have crept in. A lot of stories were fabricated to build a narrative. Historical facts may have been misinterpreted, misrepresented, or even hallucinated. Technical details might have been fudged. On balance, I still find a lot of value in this book considering the breadth of coverage and the depth of (fictionalized) detail.

Gemini Flash models were the workhorse for the project - they don't seem to top the benchmarks, but they're super-fast, and a standard pro subscription gave me this entire project including several full revisions of the early volumes.
