A former political assassin, Siberian prisoner, and hero to Russia's peasants, she returned in 1917 determined to help build a revolution of her own. For a time, that brought her into an alliance with Lenin and the Bolsheviks. But their visions of the revolution were fundamentally different. When Lenin signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk and the Bolsheviks tightened their control over the countryside, Spiridonova broke with him and eventually helped lead an uprising against the government she had helped create.
