Beyond Coding: The Philosophy and Craft of Reflexive Thematic Analysis

Reflexive Thematic Analysis is more than a technique for coding qualitative data—it is a theoretically informed, interpretive, and reflexive approach to meaning-making. This video explores the evolving craft of Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA) and examines what distinguishes it from more procedural or reliability-oriented approaches to thematic analysis. Designed for researchers, postgraduate students, nursing and health-science scholars, and educators working with qualitative data, the video moves beyond step-by-step formulas to examine the philosophical and methodological assumptions that shape how themes are actually developed. A central focus is the role of the researcher as an active interpreter and meaning-maker. In reflexive thematic analysis, subjectivity is not treated simply as a source of bias that must be eliminated. Instead, researchers are expected to recognize, examine, and communicate how their theoretical positioning, experiences, assumptions, disciplinary knowledge, and engagement with the data contribute to the analytic process. A particularly important distinction is: Codes identify something potentially meaningful in the data. Themes tell a larger interpretive story about patterned meaning. Strong themes therefore do more than collect similar quotations. They provide an analytically coherent account that helps answer the research question while illuminating how participants understand, experience, negotiate, or make sense of their worlds.
