You can intend a new life in an old room, and the room wins. After childhood trauma your nervous system reads your environment all day, the clutter, the people, the routines, the corners, and it takes its cues from what it sees rather than from what you have decided. Trauma researcher Dr Jen Achari walks through four signs your environment is holding you in place and shows how to read your room, then edit it, one corner, one conversation, one routine at a time.
If you feel stuck after trauma even though you have done the inner work, this video explains why. Healing after childhood trauma is a nervous system process, and the nervous system learns from conditions. It is reading your surroundings for cues of safety or threat (Stephen Porges calls this neuroception) and it is reading your body (interoception). A room that still looks like the old life keeps sending the old signal. Change the signal and the body can finally update.
