Queues built up around the edge of Gloucester over the weekend as thousands of vehicles had to be diverted from the M5 between the two junctions to allow the footbridges to be removed.
The bridges, which are located between junctions 11 and 12 of the motorway, have served as pedestrian footpaths for the past 64 years but have deteriorated beyond repair and are now in need of replacement, National Highways said.
Crash mats were placed on the motorway while the work was happening to catch any falling debris and stop it from damaging the road.
The two bridges, both 69 metres in length, will be dismantled by high-reach excavators over the weekend, with 440 tonnes of concrete and 14 tonnes of steel tendons removed from the carriageway before the road reopens.
The demolition of the bridges has been coordinated between National Highways and Gloucestershire County Council. Both bridges are due to be replaced by 2029 (PENDING FUNDING).

⚠️ Machines in Use: ⚠️
The primary machines and equipment deployed on-site included:
• 50-tonne high-reach excavators: Heavy-duty Hitachi excavators used to safely reach and dismantle the 69-metre concrete bridge structures from the ground.
• Hydraulic breakers:
Powerful attachment hammers fitted to the excavators to systematically crush the concrete and snap the 14 tonnes of internal steel tendons.
• Protective crash mats:
Massive layers of cushioning laid directly over the tarmac to protect the motorway surface from falling debris.
• Concrete processing and recycling plant:
Stationary mobile machinery positioned at nearby compounds to crush and process the recovered material for recycling.
• Roll-on/roll-off containers and waste wagons:
Large containment units and tipper trucks used to quickly clear debris and haul materials away from the carriageway.
• Low loaders and transport vehicles: Heavy logistics trucks used to mobilise and demobilise the massive excavation plant to and from the site.
Additionally, the main demolition works and plant logistics were overseen by the principal infrastructure contractor, M Group, who managed the mobilisation of the heavy machinery vehicles to the site.

🚚 Truck Transport & Haulage:
EJM McCADAM was the primary haulage and muck-away transport operator providing trucks for the M5 bridge demolition.
They deployed a fleet of eight tipper trucks (tipper lorries) that operated continuously over a 22-hour day-and-night shift to clear the site. Their trucks were responsible for hauling the 440 tonnes of broken concrete from the motorway carriageway to the nearby site compound, where it was processed into recycled aggregate.
