Known as Batavia, it was a well fortified European style town and many of the old colonial buildings still stand today. After enjoying a local snack, that I thought was going to be more of a drink, called Es Selendang Mayang, I took a horse ride around the old city. It was a nice, relaxing way to explore a bit while getting shade from the scorching sun. I then visited a very fancy restaurant called Jajaghu that had very reasonable prices. I enjoyed their Nasi Tumpeng, which is a cone-shaped serving of rice with sides of vegetables and meat originating and is a traditional Javanese food. The restaurant had load of dessert options but I felt like going for more of a wander around the old town and finding something sweet from the street food vendors. I ended up buying a 10,000 rupiah ($0.55 USD) cup of Es Teler, which is liker is an Indonesian fruit cocktail. Ingredients are usually avocado, coconut flesh, grass jelly, jackfruit and other sweet ingredients of fruit, served with coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk and pandan. There's a whole bunch of flavours and it's super cold, sweet and refreshing. Just perfect when you're outdoors in Jakarta during the daytime. Usually after eating something that sweet I wouldn't be up for savoury food for a while, but I found a place selling Gado Gado and I suddenly had an appetite for it. Gado-Gado is a vegetable salad that comes with a rich peanut sauce and us super popular all over Indonesia. I was going to end the vlog there, but decided to come back another day to cover the museums and learn more history from this fascinating area. First I visited the museum of the central bank, then the Wayang museum, then the Jakarta History Museum. I enjoyed the bank and wayang museums but I found the Jakarta history museum a bit boring and lacking in interesting items. The museums were a nice way to spend time in air conditioned comfort at the hottest time of the afternoon, and after that it was time for a bit of exploring, when I walked up to the ruins of the old Batavia Castle known as Kasteel Batavia. There's not much left of the old fort other than some warehouse building that's half collapsed and an old wall, but it was worth checking out none the less. And some local kids turned up to tell me that the place is haunted and they've seen the ghost of a young Dutch lady there. I finished my exploration of old Batavia at the maritime museum, known as Museum Bahari, which is located in a 17th century spice warehouse built by the VOC close to where they first entered Java by sea. I enjoyed visiting all the places in this vlog and learned a lot about Jakarta's history.
