A police officer is sent home from his shift on suspicion of being under the influence. Seven hours later a retired cop calls in the car in front of him. On a Saturday afternoon in August 2026, a twelve-year officer in Mansfield, Ohio reported for work and was relieved of duty on suspicion of being under the influence. That evening a retired officer, out delivering food, followed a white rental car for ten minutes while it weaved across the road and drifted into the grass, and he stayed on the line with dispatch the whole way. The driver was the officer who had been sent home. This is the complete sequence from three body cameras, the transport, and the booking room: the stop, the recognition, "is your body cam off?", the refused field tests, the inventory of the car, the phone call to his own department, the implied-consent warning he refused, and the address he gave when he had no other. Then the breakdown: why the stop was lawful on two independent grounds, what refusing a chemical test costs in Ohio before any judge is involved, grades for the three officers and for the driver, and five lessons that apply to anyone at a roadside window.
