Altering the speed and pitch of tape recordings was a common practice in music production, used for various reasons such as achieving more punchiness or increasing the overall pitch. These changes were done using a Variable Speed Oscillator (VSO), a control on a tape machine that allowed the speed and pitch to be altered during playback.
Thanks to a picture of the tape box for the master tape of the long version of the song, which lists the VSO value used on the recording, I was able to restore the original recording speed of the track. The long version of "Billie Jean" is essentially an extended cut of the song released on the single, so naturally, its +3.0% VSO value also translates to all the other mainline versions of the song.
