Babymetal walks onto the stage at Petco Park in San Diego on August 30 as a special guest of My Chemical Romance. Three days later they kick off their own 20-day US headlining tour. Babymetal didn’t just break through. They opened a gate. Hanabie, Nemophila, Lovebites, Band-Maid — the entire Japanese metal scene that came after them moves through the same opening. The metal industry calls this “success.” We call it the receipt for a strategic decision Babymetal made 12 years ago. “Chegg’d” is a term we use on our sister channel, Street Economics. It means an institution that charged you for what a free tool does better. Chegg, the $14B homework company, got killed by ChatGPT. Same shape, different victim. The Western metal industry got Chegg’d by a three-piece Japanese idol-metal band that refused everything the breakthrough playbook said you had to do, and by an entire scene that followed. Our sister channel Street Economics covers economic development. Sometimes they overlap. This is one of those times. The lessons here scale: bands, scenes, cities. They all pay the same playbook tax. Some refuse it. The ones who refuse it the right way are the ones we end up writing about ten years later. Babymetal refused it. Japan came with them. The lessons travel.
