Why do we feel compelled to argue, defend ourselves, expose others and have the final word? Drawing upon the teachings of Imam al Ghazali and the classical Islamic tradition, this lecture explores the ethics and psychology of speech, disputation, argumentation, anger, silence, forgiveness and beautiful character. Not every argument is wrong. There are moments when rights must be defended, injustice confronted and harm removed. But there is also a dangerous form of disputation that begins with the desire to prove ourselves right and gradually opens the doors to pride, aggression, resentment and the desire to humiliate another person. One of the most powerful lessons discussed here is simple: something being true does not automatically mean it needs to be said. Speech must also be weighed by its benefit, its consequences and the intention behind it. The lecture also examines marriage disputes, assumptions about others, the intellectual humility of Imam Malik, the importance of saying “I do not know,” forgiveness, prophetic service, the dignity of traditional scholarship and the immense power of beautiful words. The discussion then turns toward a remarkably relevant subject: social media. The principles governing our tongues also govern what we type, post, share and reveal online. Every post communicates something about us, and information placed on the internet can travel far beyond the audience for whom it was originally intended. At the heart of the lecture is a call to recover something increasingly rare: dignified speech. Speak beautifully. Know when to disagree. Know when justice requires you to speak. Know when silence is wiser. Guard your intentions. Protect the dignity of others. And never allow the desire to win an argument to cost you your character. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught that a beautiful word is itself an act of charity. May Allah purify our hearts, guard our tongues, beautify our character and restore wisdom, mercy and dignity to the Ummah. Topics discussed: Imam al Ghazali, guarding the tongue, Islamic manners, arguments, disputation, anger, marriage conflict, forgiveness, social media, Islamic psychology, adab, beautiful speech, silence, traditional Islamic scholarship and Prophetic character. - Rawdat al Ilm - Islamic Guidance is a knowledge-centered platform devoted to preserving and sharing the authentic teachings of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah.
