Welcome to Broken Silence, the third full UK breakbeat mix by Formul@DNA.
After Broken Transmission, I wanted to keep moving further into the sound that originally got me hooked on breakbeat in the early 2000s.
Broken Silence carries on with those rolling drums, heavy basslines and broken rhythms, but this mix has a little more space to breathe. The tracks build gradually, grooves develop over time and the heavier moments are allowed to arrive naturally rather than everything being thrown at you straight away.
Big breaks. Deep bass. Dark atmospheres. Strange sounds. Long builds. Rolling grooves.
There’s still plenty of variation throughout the mix, but everything sits within the same world. Some tracks are darker, some more atmospheric and others hit harder, but the aim was for the whole mix to flow together from beginning to end.
Once again, the inspiration comes from that early-2000s UK breaks sound I remember so fondly — when tracks were allowed to develop, drums were front and centre and a proper breakbeat groove could just keep rolling.
Broken Silence is another attempt to capture some of that feeling using modern tools while keeping the spirit of that era firmly at the heart of it.

WHAT IS UK BREAKBEAT?
Breakbeat is all about the drums.
Unlike the straight four-to-the-floor rhythm used in a lot of dance music, breakbeat moves the kicks, snares, hi-hats and percussion around the beat. That creates the broken, syncopated rhythm that gives the music its distinctive rolling feel.
The UK breaks scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s pulled ideas from rave, hip-hop, jungle, drum & bass, funk, electro and underground electronic music and turned them into something of its own.
It could be dark, funky, atmospheric, aggressive or downright strange — sometimes all within the same track.
For me, the best breakbeat was never just about the drop. It was about the journey getting there: the tension, the layering, the changing percussion, the bass creeping in and the moment when everything finally locks together.
That’s the spirit behind Broken Silence.
If a track catches your ear, let me know in the comments which one stood out.
