Late-Summer Walkabout in Old Town St. Lawrence - Toronto

Come along with me for a late-summer walkabout through Old Town St. Lawrence, beginning at the historic St. Lawrence Market, whose name comes from the original name of the area - the St. Lawrence Ward - interestingly the Market was once known as the Market Block. From there, we wander through the wonderfully flora-lined streets, taking in the harmonious mix of old and new architecture, a few Hollywood film locations, and some of the neighbourhood’s most charming public spaces. We make our way through the renowned St. James Park and into the Cathedral Church of St. James, where it’s a nice delight to step inside and take in the awe-inspiring interior. From there, we wander through Berczy Park, including its wonderfully whimsical dog fountain, before continuing past some of the area’s newer condominium buildings and the avant-garde L Tower, one of Toronto’s more distinctive starchitect creations. Along the way, we delve into a little Gooderham lore, including the long-told story of an underground tunnel associated with George Gooderham, and the remarkable story of his involvement with Manufacturers Life Insurance, now Manulife. George Gooderham became its second president after Sir John A. Macdonald, and upon his death in 1905, the succession duties on his estate were reportedly large enough to wipe out Ontario’s provincial debt that year.
