Béla Bartók — The Miraculous Mandarin, Op. 19 | Arranged for Nine Players The Miraculous Mandarin is not only one of Bartók’s largest and most complex works of his musical output, it is also one of the most controversial due to its setting and subject matter. Conductor and artistic director, Fergus McAlpine, even goes so far as to pair it with Stravinsky’s ‘The Rite of Spring’ as one of two masterworks that maintain their shock value over a century later. Madhouse Orchestra presents this performance in an arrangement for nine players, bringing Bartók’s explosive ballet into the realm of chamber music.
