Early in the Cold War , Britain and the United States tried to build seriously fast, seriously low flying supersonic strike aircraft.
The result was a pair of very different but equally ambitious aviation programmes, that tested what was possible to breaking point: the BAC TSR-2 and the General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark.
Both were designed go under, rather than over, Soviet SAM defences at over Mach 1, and deliver a nuclear payload onto a target as much as 1,000nm from home base.
In theory, these aircraft would be revolutionary. In reality, not so much.
