Cycle Touring The Low Countries | A Near Miss, Heat Exhaustion & The Amazing Maastunnel

Our Low Countries cycling adventure continues as we leave Ghent in Belgium and cycle towards Rotterdam in the Netherlands — but this leg of the journey doesn't go entirely to plan! After enjoying some fantastic cycling infrastructure, we head from Ghent to Antwerp and then on towards Rotterdam, discovering some of the incredible cycling routes that make travelling by bike through Belgium and the Netherlands such a pleasure. But in Antwerp, our trip nearly comes to a very sudden end. A fish van comes dangerously close to Roy, and for a moment we genuinely wonder whether the whole tour is about to be over. We eventually continue towards Rotterdam, where we face one of the most unusual parts of the journey — cycling through the enormous Maastunnel. But the heat is beginning to take its toll. Wendy suffers from heat exhaustion, forcing us to reassess the day's ride. It's a reminder that sometimes the sensible decision on a cycling tour is simply to call it a day. After reaching Rotterdam, we board the overnight ferry to Hull before continuing our journey by bike back into England and eventually on to Lincoln. And that's where the contrasts really begin. Having experienced the fantastic cycling infrastructure of Belgium and the Netherlands, returning to the UK leaves us disappointed by some of the cycling infrastructure, litter and problems with crime we encounter. But despite the difficult moments, this was an amazing cycling adventure and one we won't forget.
