#dineshkanji #shabanaazmi #amirkhan #batwara1947review अलिकडेच प्रदर्शित झालेला ‘बटवारा १९४७’ हा चित्रपट बॉक्स ऑफिसवर दणकून आपटला. अभिनेत्री शबाना आझमी यांची या चित्रपटात मध्यवर्ती भूमिका होती, त्यामुळे स्वाभाविकपणे त्यांना हा चित्रपट अपयशी ठरल्याचे दु:ख झाले. परंतु, त्याहीपेक्षा जास्त दु:ख त्यांना या गोष्टीचे झाले की प्रेक्षकांनी सनी देओल यांना एका मुस्लिम व्यक्तीच्या भूमिकेत स्वीकारले नाही. प्रेक्षकांनी सनी देओलचा ‘बटवारा’ नाकारला; पण याच सनी देओलचा ‘गदर’ हा चित्रपट प्रेक्षकांनी हॅण्डपम्पसह डोक्यावर घेतला होता. ‘गदर’मधल्या तारासिंगचा हॅण्डपम्प अंगावर कोसळल्यासारखा ‘बटवारा १९४७’ कोसळला आहे. हिंदी सिनेसृष्टीतील काही लोकांना ७० च्या दशकातील तेच जुने चाटण प्रेक्षकांना चाटवायचे आहे, मात्र प्रेक्षक ते स्वीकारायला तयार नाहीत. हीच शबाना यांची व्यथा आहे. ‘लाहोर नई वेख्या, ओ जम्या इ नई’ या असगर वजाहत यांच्या नाटकावर आधारित हा चित्रपट आहे. हे नाटक गंगा-जमनी संस्कृतीचा उदोउदो करणारे आहे. म्हणजेच सगळे धर्म सारखे, ‘इन्सानियत’ हाच खरा धर्म असा डोस पाजून हिंदूंना कायम धर्मनिरपेक्षतेच्या गुंगीमध्ये ठेवण्याचा हा प्रयत्न वाटतो. या चित्रपटाची निर्मिती आमीर खान प्रॉडक्शनने केलेली आहे. आमीर खानसुद्धा तेच जुने विचार नव्या पॅकिंगमध्ये विकणारा अभिनेता-निर्माता आहे. ‘पीके’ चित्रपटात हिंदू देवतांची यथेच्छ टवाळी केल्यानंतर आमीर खान हिंदुत्ववाद्यांच्या रडारवर आला. हाच आमीर खान मक्केला गेला, तिथे अगदी शैतानाला दगड मारण्यापासून सर्व रितीरिवाज त्याने भक्तीभावाने पाळले. स्वतःच्या धर्मातील अनिष्ट रूढींबाबत डोळ्यांवर कातडे ओढून बसायचे, परंतु हिंदूंच्या देवतांना मात्र टिंगलीचा विषय बनवायचा, हा यांचा खरा चेहरा आहे. आमीर खान निर्माता असल्यामुळे चित्रपटाच्या ट्रेलरमध्ये ‘मंदीर तोडना इस्लाम नही’, ‘कोई मजहब बुरा नही होता, अच्छा बुरा आदमी होता है...’ असे खंडीभर संवाद आहेत, जे कदाचित मूळ नाटकामध्येही असावेत. ट्रेलरमध्ये हे दोन संवाद ऐकूनच बऱ्याच लोकांनी चित्रपट पाहणे टाळले असावे. The recently released film ‘Batwara 1947’ bombed spectacularly at the box office. Actress Shabana Azmi had a central role in the film, so naturally, she was saddened by its failure. However, what upset her even more was the fact that audiences did not accept Sunny Deol playing the role of a Muslim character. The audience rejected Sunny Deol’s ‘Batwara’, but the same Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar’ was embraced wholeheartedly by audiences, along with the iconic handpump. Just as Tara Singh’s handpump came crashing down in Gadar, ‘Batwara 1947’ has crashed at the box office. Some people in the Hindi film industry want to feed audiences the same old ideological formula from the 1970s, only in new packaging. But audiences are no longer willing to accept it. That, it seems, is the real source of Shabana Azmi’s anguish. The film is based on Asghar Wajahat’s play ‘Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Nai’. The play glorifies the idea of Ganga-Jamuni culture. In other words, it appears to promote the message that all religions are equal and that “humanity is the only true religion”—an attempt, critics would argue, to keep Hindus perpetually under the influence of secular rhetoric. The film has been produced by Aamir Khan Productions. Aamir Khan, too, is an actor-producer who appears to be selling the same old ideas in new packaging. After openly mocking Hindu deities in the film PK, Aamir Khan came under the radar of Hindu nationalist groups. The same Aamir Khan later went to Mecca, where he devoutly observed the religious rituals, including the stoning of the devil. According to this criticism, their approach is to turn a blind eye to problematic practices within their own religion while making Hindu deities the subject of ridicule. Since Aamir Khan is the producer, the film’s trailer contains several dialogues such as “Breaking temples is not Islam” and “No religion is bad; it is people who can be good or bad.” These dialogues may also have been part of the original play.
