Within weeks, army agents counted it, valued it and divided it by rank, while the Company took land, the Nizam of Hyderabad took districts and a Wodeyar boy was set on the throne of Mysore. This documentary follows the loot of an empire: the golden throne broken up and sold, the mechanical tiger shipped to London, the rockets copied at Woolwich, the library and the sword that sold for millions. It asks what happened to Tipu Sultan's treasure, who profited, and whether it was prize or plunder. It is the story of how a ruler's state fell, told on Rise and Fall of Crowns, a series about how absolute power rises and falls. Prize figures are estimates, and the sources disagree.
