Imagine having the worst day at work of your life — and then realizing you are not free to leave.
About 2,500 years ago, enslaved workers entered the silver-mining district of Laurion in southern Attica. Above them, Athens was becoming famous for democracy, temples, silver coins, political debate, and naval power. Underground, your world was rock, baskets, tools, narrow galleries, and work you could not simply quit.
In this episode, you’ll follow the journey of Laurion’s silver from the rock face to ore processing, Athenian revenue, and eventually the naval power that helped shape Greek history. You’ll also see what Xenophon, Herodotus, and archaeology actually tell us — and where the evidence stops.
Because the story of Athens is not only the story of citizens debating freedom above ground. It is also the story of people working beneath them who did not share that freedom.
